In digital-video and still-image color spaces such as Y2 CbCr, the luma and chrominance components are digital sample values.
Y is the luminance, D _ B and D _ R are the chrominance components, representing the red and blue colour differences.
The chrominance components can be, but do not necessarily have to be, down-scaled in resolution; in fact, since the wavelet transformation already separates images into scales, downsampling is more effectively handled by dropping the finest wavelet scale.
It encodes a color image or video taking human perception into account, allowing reduced bandwidth for chrominance components, thereby typically enabling transmission errors or compression artifacts to be more efficiently masked by the human perception than using a " direct " RGB-representation.
